Commentary on covid hard lock and resilience in a South African Township.

Uber Feets…

“”Hier kom hullle, hier kom hulle”, the cry rings across the still night, over the tin roofs above the din of dogs barking. Gone are the normal sounds of Tshisa nyama, music and laughter. Far off we hear revving of engines and nearby people scatter into alleys hiding from the roaring beast coming down between the shacks. Just like the old days expect the vans are white not yellow but the intention is the same.

“Come in come in”Auntie Fozia calls “en julle kinders gaan huis toe hulle gaan vir jou opsluit” as the little kids flee from the feeding queue into their nearby homes. Younger men cut through our lane dodging the flying police van at the last minute as if fleeing the bull from the bull run, they run off laughing. “We cant gather in groups we must all stay home, how will you feed “I ask Yolanda? Her big smile pierces the darkness, Über Feets of course”.

Uber Feets…

Gone are the queues of smiling beautiful children with mixed mash clothing and the bent-over elderly all clutching their food bowls. The laneway is empty…all of a sudden two women hit out between the shacks carrying bags of food like the Hunger Games. Its dark and the overhead spotlights create shapes in the shadows. By some sort of magic, all the food bowls that were clutched in the queues are now been filled with hot dinner and carried in bags by strong fit women runners called Uber Feets, to be dropped at all the houses. At no point did I see the queue pass over the food bowls to the Marshalls yet here these women hitting out again and again.

The Uber Feets are armed with speed, face masks, and gloves, even in the darkness between the shacks and poverty, correct protocols are followed. We have no COVID 19 here.
