The Department of Health hosted a Traditional Medicine Summit which will serve as a platform for stakeholders in the traditional medicine sector to meet with the Department and discuss how to advance and formalize the sector into the national healthcare system.

 

Traditional Medicine Summit 2023: Department of Health.

The Department of Health hosted the Traditional Medicine Summit 2023 to allow stakeholders in the traditional medicine sector to discuss the integration of traditional medicine into the national healthcare system. The summit will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and solutions for the formalisation of traditional medicine into the healthcare system. Stakeholders will also discuss how to provide legal recognition and protection for traditional medicine practitioners, and how to ensure the safety and quality of traditional medicine products.

The summit will also provide an opportunity for stakeholders to develop a strategy for the integration of traditional medicine into the health system, which includes policy and regulatory frameworks, as well as strategies for research, education and training.

The summit will bring together stakeholders from the traditional medicine sector, including representatives from Traditional Health Practitioner Organisations, the Director-General of Health, Dr Sandile Buthelezi, Minister Joe Phaahla, Government Officials, Political Parties, Indigenous Knowledge Practitioners Council IKPC, SAPRA, and the Media.

The summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to have meaningful conversations and develop solutions to better integrate traditional medicine into the national health care system. It is hoped that the summit will help to bring about meaningful change, which will benefit the health and well-being of South Africans.
