South Africa, the land of extremes and contrasts…Public Hospital experience at GSH or Grotties.

Today was one of those surreal days, a day of contrasts…my morning starts off early before dawn heading to Groote Schuur Public Hospital hoping to get an appointment at the eye clinic. I purposely come on Tuesday to avoid the weekend carnage.
I enter the OPD, the queue is already snaking around the corner and all the seats are full of the elderly, sick and injured. There is a buzz in the air. This is not Constantiaberg, this is frontline and it’s not even Accident and Emergency.
I sit west, I look through the small dirty windows to the mountainside graveyard with the many gravestones protruding through the green mountainside, like houses. Who are these people?
  
Seated next to me is a young Zimbabwean, a Malawian who was stabbed in the eye and Jane with a heart condition. In front sits a doting mom from Capricorn and her 23yr old son who wants to be a driver. He is scared…”They hit him in the eye with a stick with a nail through it.”
Next to her sits grandfather Brad from Genadendal is his Sunday’s finest suit topped with a hat. “My children have done well, one is even in England, an IT manager with 6 English under him. “He glows with pride. “I worked on oil rigs to get them an education. But one son has fallen to drugs. “Education and discipline is the key to success,” he tells me.
  
We all huddle together in the cold on the hard wooden benches. I can still smell wood smoke sitting so close. I share my cinnamon doughnut with Jane. She tells of lost love and men. “Ha the men, the men they just want pleasure and not the responsibility!” She is a single mum who looks after rich kids in Constantia and now has a granddaughter living with her in her small RDP house. “They broke open my door and stole all my stuff. I have now burglar bars and a safety gate.” “Ha men, I don’t need one I am much happier single”. She laughs and after some time falls asleep on my shoulder.
The young Zimbabwean man buys the Malawian soup sharing out his last R10. He tells of life in Philippi, the cold, the crime, and the difficulties facing foreigners in our townships. “I only put in R200 of petrol so when they steal my car they can only get as far as Khayelitsha before they run out…”ja they target us, foreigners, we do business but the tsotsis know we don’t go the Police as they chase us away. It has better know with the Police but some are illegal and the tsotsis know this.” 
 
The young Malawian man was mugged off his shoes, jacket, cell phone and money and stabbed in the eye for resisting. He is from Lilongwe and like many Malawians supports a family back home. His shoulders are hunched and his face bandaged. He has lost hope.
There is a confused man sitting barefoot with only a blue hospital nightgown and flimsy blanket. We huddle it’s dam cold. Cold is the stare of the prisoner in a jail-issued orange overall handcuffed to a wheelchair.
A well-dressed young good-looking doctor calls my name and ushers me to the chair.

My evening starts heading to Property Managers HQ for the AGM. I am now dressed in smart shoes, Chequered shirt covered with a Mohair vest and Harvest Softshell Sports Jacket.
I enter the Property Developers HQ, the white marble foyer is empty with no chairs, and large windows reflecting the light, I stop and marvel at the white sterile reception. It is dead quiet. A lone security guard whose dark skin is in contrast to the whiteness of the marble, smiles and lets me through the glass security gate.
A well-dressed young good-looking portfolio manager calls my name and ushers me to my chair.
I sit west, I look through the large windows to the mountainside and the beautiful white mansions protruding through the green mountainside like gravestones. Who are these people?

The man from Constantia sitting next to me is worth more than the combined wealth of all the people I encountered today. I am not offered anything. I smell expensive cologne. We don’t share stories, it is business and very well-orchestrated. There is no soul-bearing and honesty, I feel somehow cheated.

 

The Doctor Dialogue:

”The legendary Dr Kupper first operated in my eye, way before you were born Doctor” Dr Van Der Merwe winks…
Dr Van Der Merwe, “You know corneas are scarce as hens teeth but I am sure we can do something. Really, I am sure. It is risky and if we could actually get a cornea we can do something with that eye. It is hard there is a lot of young people who need a cornea.”
“Dr save the cornea for a younger person, someone needier than me.” I am an old dog and I only need one good eye.”
