To the old man with hunched shoulders who shuffles and struggles past my house everyday to go shopping.

I always wondered…

Hoekom sy rug is soe krom?

How someone so strong and proud,

is now so krom!

What powerful forces are at work,

to bend and buckle not only mountains but strong men!

I see you shuffle, stop then shuffle some more,

every day to the shops is an Everest,

the determination and pain etched on your face,

as you ascend the mountains face,

with every step,

gnarled hands like Tankwa bonsais,

envelope the walking stick.

Like buckle and bends in the mountain,

once so proud and so tall,

nou soe krom,

gravity and time,

pulling you down closer.

Friends,

brothers and sisters,

companions,

leave you behind,

like chips breaking off,

tears fall to the ground like mountain streams,

the winds of time howling through the cracks.

Time is anaesthetic for the inevitable.

I wonder no more…
